Blog Molds.

A few times I’ve been asked what exactly my blog is about. If you had to place me in a category, I guess you could say it’s a healthy lifestyle blog. But honestly, and maybe this will not be a popular response, I’m not interested in becoming part of a blog mold.

I started my very first blog in 2010. It lasted for a couple of years before I made an impulsive decision to delete it. The blog had a pretty strong following and was something I was proud of. For the most part, I stayed true to the reasons I started the blog in the first place.

At the time, I had gained 20 pounds in the course of a few short months. My blog became a place to document my weight loss journey, my food intake, and general thoughts of a mind disordered with counting points and calories. I blogged about fitness, recipes, daily struggles and successes…and eventually began adding in some fashion posts as well.

Fashion, particularly J Crew fashion, has always been a major interest of mine. I loved the idea of putting together outfits using statement, classic pieces and even began a second blog just for that hobby. Sadly, when I made the decision to delete the first blog, I deleted the second blog as well.

Now, I’m here at The Brooklyn Fig. Some may describe my blog as all over the place. Where do I fit in? I blog about family, food, friends, and house projects. And I’d truly love to start throwing in some fashion posts, but it will just add to the mish mosh. But what I’ve realized recently is I just don’t care.

There is a certain satisfaction when people leave genuine comments on your blog. It makes me feel like something I said or did affected others in a positive way. So yes, I do love that. But really, I need to get back to the place where I blog for me. That’s right, I really don’t do it for you. Call me selfish, click off my blog if you must, but this is me. I’m not going to fit into a mold. Unless you call that mold “passions.”

So tell me…do you generally only follow blogs that fit into one niche?

  1. I get bored if a blog is TOO focused. There’s only so much you can read about one topic! I think you’re doing a great job of keeping it interesting with different topics 🙂

  2. Hiiii! I have been reading this blog since you started it and look forward to it everyday when I get home from work and unwind. I feel like I can really relate to you as I’m getting married in a few months, am Italian, I love to cook/clean/do house projects/stalk new fashion styles, oh and did I mention my name is Maria too ha! So please don’t change a thing!! I really look forward to reading about all different subjects, I never know what to expect each day and I really like that. You are true to yourself so keep it up 🙂

  3. Honestly, I think I’m much LESS likely to follow niche blogs than general blogs. There aren’t really any niches I’m interested in reading about ALL the time, I genuinely love variety!

  4. I just found your blog tonight, but I’m glad that I did. You share honestly…and I think that’s what makes a blog worth following. Thank you for being willing to blog for yourself. That is what matters the most!

  5. I think you should blog about things you love. Who cares if it fits into a niche?? I happen to blog a lot about fitness because I love fitness more than anything so if that makes me a health and fitness blogger then ok. I still blog about wine and cheese and chocolate too because I love all those things. You gotta do it because you love it!

  6. I love your outlook on blogging! I say that my blog is about healthy living, but I just go with the flow. Whatever I’d like to blog about will be up there. At first, I think I tried way too hard to have a certain “sound” to my blog, but that quickly faded when I realized I wasn’t doing anyone a favor by trying too hard to fit into a mold. Blogging should be for the blogger.

  7. I love anything you write about!! If I could like each and every comment for this post I would!!
